What to expect when attending a professional development course
Course format
EYSM courses are highly interactive, including small breakout rooms. Participants will work together to explore techniques, share best practices, and foster a collaborative environment to thrive as leaders.
Topics will evolve with each offering of the series. Check this webpage for current offerings. You are welcome to attend one, some, or all of the courses in the series. It is not a sequential curriculum or associated with a certificate.Â
EYSM is limited to participants who are people managers.
Who should attend?
UW–Madison supervisors or managers of staff, who:
- Conduct performance conversations
- Oversee the work of others
- Hire new employees
- Onboard new employees
- Make decisions about the time and work of others
- Encourage professional development of others

- EYSM: Leading Through Change
April 16, 9 – 11:30 a.m.
Change is a constant in any organization. Effective leaders can recognize the phases of transition and the stressors individuals may face during organizational change. Many factors influence how people will react to change and what tools they need to accept and succeed. This course provides participants with the skills and tools to be an effective initiator, agent, and manager of change. - EYSM: Leading with Empathy

Honoring and valuing our emotions is the first step toward improving emotional intelligence. We must practice understanding our feelings and learn what causes them to empathize with others. In this course, you will explore emotions as data for responsive – rather than reactive – interactions, communication, and decision-making. - EYSM: Building Trust at Work

Trust is the cornerstone of a successful workplace. This course is designed to help supervisors cultivate a culture of trust within their teams. Participants will explore a trust-building framework to understand trust’s impact on team performance and morale. - EYSM: Coaching Employees for Retention

UW–Madison’s workforce is its greatest asset. Retaining employees is critical to achieving the university’s mission and your team’s success. Investing in an employee’s growth demonstrates that you and the organization value the employee. This course uses the skill of coaching to dialogue with employees about career development. - EYSM: Documenting Performance
May 14, 9 – 10:30 a.m.
Performance management is an ongoing process where supervisors and employees work together to plan, monitor, and review an employee’s goals. A key element of performance management is documenting expectations, accomplishments, strengths, and development opportunities. This course explores the STAR method for documenting with specific examples. - EYSM: Navigating Difficult Conversations
May 21, 9 – 11 a.m.
In today’s workplace, one crucial skill that can positively impact work culture and relationships is the ability to navigate difficult conversations effectively. In this session, we will get clarity about what differentiates these conversations. We will discuss how to approach, rather than avoid, these conversations in a healthy, well-prepared way. We will offer a framework for planning the conversation and allow you to practice. - EYSM: Resilient Leadership
May 28, 9 – 10:30 a.m.
Resiliency is the capacity to recover from difficulties. It is an ability that can be strengthened and improved. This course explores ways to increase personal resiliency and show up for others during challenging times.
