Definitions of Healthy, Inclusive, and Engaging

A work environment where employees are supported, valued and respected, feel connected to their work, and able to fully contribute to the mission of the University.

Healthy Definition

Employees are aware of their individual wellness needs and feel supported in achieving their goals. They are able to work toward finding balance throughout the seven interconnected dimensions of wellness (physical, emotional, social and cultural, career and academic, spiritual, financial, and environmental) as it pertains to their specific lifestyles, needs, and interests. They do not feel pressured to conform to one wellness ideology. Healthy employees may experience increased energy, satisfaction, and ability to be true to their core personal values; as a result, they may be more successful, productive, and committed to the organization.

Inclusion Definition

Inclusion refers to a sense of belonging; feeling respected, valued, and seen for who you are and valued as a contributing member of the team, work group, or organization. An inclusive culture is one in which barriers to contribution and negative biases are eliminated, and people are respected and able to give their personal best.

Engagement Definition

Engagement is the feeling of being fully involved in and enthusiastic about work. Engaged employees have a heightened connection to their work, the organization and its mission, and their co-workers. Engaged employees find personal meaning in their work and are more likely to go above the minimum and expend “discretionary effort.”
