Knowledges are an understanding of a concept.

Skills are proficiencies developed through training and experience.

Some job titles, in the Title and Standard Job Description (SJD) Library, are linked to a list of the top 5 knowledges and skills. Formal and informal learning opportunities are available for each knowledge and skill.

Knowledges and skills are mapped to a list derived from the U.S. Department of Labor database called the Occupational Information Network (<a href=”https://www.onetonline.org/”>O*NET</a>). They may be a combination of technical and relational skills.

Who are knowledges and skills for?

Knowledges and skills are for UW–Madison employees who want to develop their skills, stay relevant in their career industry, or want to learn something new.

How can I use knowledges and skills?

Knowledges and skills can be used as a guide to connect employees with resources that relate to their job titles. Follow these tips to find resources that interest you:

  1. Browse the full list of knowledges and skills
  2. Refine your search by using the filters to sort by keyword, job group, or job subgroup
  3. Browse the Title and Standard Job Description (SJD) library to find the knowledges and skills related to your job title

Why were knowledges and skills added to the Title and Standard Job Description Library?

In today’s rapidly evolving professional landscape, the need for continuous learning and skill development has become essential. UW–Madison is working to offer educational opportunities to meet the needs of employees and to encourage career learning.

Knowledges and skills were added to the Title and Standard Job Description Library to connect employees to learning resources related to their job title.

Am I required to use the knowledges and skills?

Knowledges and skills are optional for employees and are not required. The resources provided are for employees to continue building skills and learning about their industry.

How can I use knowledges and skills for my professional development?

What is LinkedIn Learning and how can I log in?

LinkedIn Learning is a free educational resource available to all current UW–Madison faculty, researchers, staff, and students. It has thousands of online courses taught by industry experts and allows users to discover new skills and interests.

To get started with LinkedIn Learning:

  1. Use your UW–Madison NetID to log in to LinkedIn Learning using this link. You can also access this link through the LinkedIn Learning tile on MyUW.
  2. If you currently have a LinkedIn account, log in using your LinkedIn credentials.
    1. If you do not have a LinkedIn account, click “Join now” and create an account.
  3. Your LinkedIn Learning profile should now be activated. Browse for courses from the home page or return to the Knowledges and Skills Learning Resources page to find courses that are related to your job title.

Why does my job title have the same knowledges and skills as other job titles?

A list of 64 knowledges and skills are mapped to 1,200 different UW–Madison job titles. Some knowledges and skills are shared among multiple job titles.

Employees who are emerging in their careers or progressing in their jobs may have some of the same knowledges and skills as employees who have established or advanced careers. It is important to note that knowledges and skills are not a reflection of job title requirements or responsibilities.
