How Job Changes Affect Time Off

This guide explains how changes to your job, such as moving to a different employee group or changing your work schedule (Full-Time Equivalent), can impact your time off and leave benefits.

University Staff Exempt Employee Choice

If you are a University Staff Exempt employee, you have a unique option: you can choose to change your appointment type to Academic Staff at any time. This decision can affect various aspects of your employment, including your paid time off accruals and benefits.

Compare Your Options

To help you make an informed decision, please review the Employee Choice Side-by-Side Comparison Resource employee-choice-side-by-side.pdf . You may consult your HR department with any questions or to request to change.

Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) Changes

Your Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) refers to the percentage of a full-time work schedule you are employed for (e.g., 1.0 FTE for full-time works 40 hours per week, 0.5 FTE for half-time works 20 hours per week). Changes to your FTE directly affect how much paid time off you earn.

Impact on Paid Time Off Earnings

Your paid time off earnings (e.g., vacation, sick leave) will change in proportion to your new FTE and the effective date of that change.

Important Considerations

  • Decrease in FTE: If your FTE decreases, you might have used more paid time off than you will be eligible to earn at your new, lower FTE. This could potentially lead to an "overuse" of your paid time off balance if not managed carefully.
  • Increase in FTE: An increase in your FTE means you will begin to earn an increased amount of paid time off.
