University of Wisconsin–Madison

Instructional Academic Staff Performance Evaluations in Workday

Starting July 1, 2026, Instructional Academic Staff (IAS) will use Workday for performance evaluations. The Workday performance review process supports the university's performance policies and best practices by emphasizing regular, meaningful conversations between employees and their supervisors. This change aligns performance evaluation timing, processes, and technology across all Universities of Wisconsin.

Performance review schedule starting July 1, 2026

Performance evaluations in Workday follow the university’s fiscal year (FY) which starts on July 1 and ends on June 30. Workday automatically launches the performance review process. IAS will receive their first review in Workday when Annual Summary Reviews launch in July 2026.  Best practice is for managers to complete evaluations within 90 days. Employees can expect to have performance conversations with their managers, supervisors, or local HR professionals.

What to expect

  • Workday performance will occur as a series of Workday tasks delivered to both the employee and supervisor in sequence.

  • Eligible IAS employees will receive a task in Workday to complete a Self-Evaluation.

    • Employees and managers (or local HR) will meet to discuss the performance evaluation.

    • To prepare for this change, local HR professionals will work with their school, college, and divisions to align Instructional Academic Staff performance evaluations with current Workday schedules and processes.

    • PMDP will remain available for Clinical Academic Staff performance reviews for now, but it will retire at a future date.

While technology and processes may change, the purpose of performance evaluations remains the same. Evaluations clarify expectations, recognize high performance, address performance issues, and identify opportunities for development. If you have questions about this process, contact your divisional HR representative.
