University of Wisconsin–Madison

Transfer to a State Agency

Overview

When you transfer from UW-Madison to a State of Wisconsin agency, your benefits will generally end at the end of the month in which your UW employment terminates. You must take action with your new employer within 30 days of the start of your new position to maintain your benefits.

You will receive a continuation notice that outlines your continuation or conversion rights to the benefit plans that you were enrolled in at the time of termination from UW. Contact HR if you have any questions.

You should review and update your Beneficiary Designation(s) with each Qualifying Life Event.

Contributions will end automatically on your last paycheck. Contact your provider for information about your account and distribution options.

If you contribute to WDC, you should confirm your election amount with your new state agency to ensure deductions continue. You must inform WDC directly about your change in employer.

Sick leave balances will transfer to the state agency. Sick leave does not transfer to State Authorities, including UW Hospitals and Clinics.

Vacation and banked leave/ALRA hours may transfer. In the event that hours are not accepted by the state agency, they will be paid out as a lump sum.
