When to Use New Title Assignment
There are only two reasons for the “New Title Assignment” job change business process:
- Complete a title change to a Non-Tenure Track (NTT) Professor title
- Complete a “track transfer” between Clinical Health Sciences (CHS) and Clinician Track (CT)
If you are unsure if this business process meets the reasons above, please consult the Compensation Center of Excellence to determine the most appropriate business process.
Non-Tenure Track (NTT)
Non-Tenure Track (NTT) titles are a special group of titles created because of Faculty Senate Resolutions. Any official job title using the word “Professor” requires approval from the Faculty Senate (Faculty Document 1596); therefore, these job titles required Faculty Senate approval.
- Resolution Approving the Academic Staff Title: Teaching Professor
- Resolution Approving the Academic Staff Title: Research Professor
- Approval of Possible Academic Staff Title: Professor of Practice
These approvals came with language that required additional reviews for the awarding of this title to an employee. Campus Guidelines for each series were created with Governance to align with the Faculty Senate resolutions. The Guidelines are owned by the Provost’s Office.
- Campus Guidelines for Academic Staff Teaching Professor Titles
- Campus Guidelines for Academic Staff Research Professor Titles
- Campus Guidelines for the Professor of Practice
Each division that wants to use the Teaching Professor, Research Professor or Professor of Practice title must develop their own guidelines for how the title will be awarded. Only divisions that have developed guidelines can use the titles.
The awarding of an NTT title to an employee is not a change in duties or a promotion. It is a title that recognizes individual achievements; therefore, there is no increase awarded when an employee is placed in the title, unless an increase is needed to raise the employee to the minimum of the salary range. Increases on the same effective date may occur due to: Market, Parity, Performance, or Temporary Change in Duties.
Differences between Faculty and NTT Titles
- The words “Faculty” or “Tenure” should not be in any business title for NTT positions.
- Faculty must perform teaching, research, and service. Non Tenure Track positions are either teaching and service or research and service only. NTT titles should never have all three components of a faculty position.
- The lack of all three components in the NTT title is why Track Transfer from Academic Staff to Faculty is not allowed per the Secretary of the Faculty.
Non-Tenure Track (NTT) Professor Titles
- Research Professor
- Research Assistant Professor – RE112

Track Transfer between CHS and CT
Clinical Health Sciences (CHS) and Clinician Track (CT) appointments are academic staff appointments. “Track Transfer” describes the process of moving an employee from one “track” to another. This process is not associated with a pay increase and is instead used to align the title track with the work being performed.
Clinical Health Sciences (CHS) / CLINICAL CARE
Specifies members of the instructional academic staff engaged in clinical activities. These titles are designed for persons involved, for at least 50 percent of the time, in the direct provision of patient care in hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and associated with teaching clinical practices. While the appointee may be involved in some research, the time allocation will reflect heavy teaching and clinical demands. A CHS appointee generally will have an M.D., a Ph.D., or other terminal degree. CHS series appointments must be made in strict accordance with the procedures specified for appointments in Center for Health Sciences divisions.
