  • Job Summary:
    Oversees the care and use of animals used in research, testing, and teaching. Monitors and promotes animal welfare at all times during animal use and during all phases of the animal's life. Develops the unit's strategic plan and budget, establishes operational standards and protocols for all animal-related services, and supervises staff to ensure proper functionality and regulatory compliance. Serves as Attending Veterinarian of record.
  • Job Responsibilities:
    • Directs strategic planning initiatives and establishes unit objectives to ensure appropriate use of financial, administrative, and staffing resources in alignment with the strategic plan
    • Develops and implements operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives
    • Designs and implements animal care programs of preventive medicine for designated individual animals and colonies
    • Provides oversight of the animal health and welfare program to ensure a high standard of care, including the training and development of veterinary care and support staff
    • Oversees the documentation of medical procedures and activity, disseminates information, and makes medical recommendations based on results
    • Serves as a subject matter expert, consultant, and unit liaison to internal and external stakeholders and leadership regarding animal care and welfare, and the use of animals in research protocols
    • Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
    • Assists faculty and research staff in developing grant proposals and animal care and use protocols, and provides continuous consultation and training during the course of projects to ensure appropriate and high-level skilled support of the research
    • Serve as the liaison between the University and the various federal and regulatory bodies that oversee the use of animals in research
    • Oversees and may conduct physical exams, diagnose medical conditions, treat injuries and diseases, and provide surgical and post-operative care for animals in various environments
