Job Summary:
Directs the design, fabrication, maintenance, and repair of research instruments and equipment to support lab research and instruction goals. Recruits, trains, and manages performance of instrument makers and technicians and manages budget to support instrument shop operations.

Job Responsibilities:
- Directs the design, development, testing, and maintenance of highly specialized instruments and mechanical systems
- Diagnoses issues, analyzes data and recommends protocol changes or improvements to assure quality and align with the strategic plan and unit objectives
- Supervises, plans, and directs operational activities of unit or program staff and resolves routine and non-routine personnel issues
- Trains staff and stakeholders on processes and procedures occasionally
- Directs the selection of materials and components with respect to physical properties, cost, and established guidelines
- Develops and audits the unit or program budget
- Serves as the main point of contact and unit liaison relaying technical information and developments to internal and external stakeholders
